Fantastic overview Michelle, thanks for that, I am in the process of researching sat phones because of the major problems that we are having with out Globalstar, we bought it about 4 years ago and took it on the CSR and it was fantastic however, after that it has been downhill all the way and with two major incidents, one last year and one this last trip it is time to do something about it, unfortunately the cost of them is a problem so this time it has to be right. I have learnt a lot from this information, Thanks again

4 x 9505A and 2 x 9505 available currently, though they rarely go for under a grand. Must be the end of the outback travel season!

Just make sure that it comes with an AC charger, DC charger and a decent battery. All of these if bought seperately can cost half the price of the phone.
Also ask the vendor of the s/h unit if the simcard holder is complete and operational. They are very easy to break, as is the aerial.

We had a Globalstar sat phone that was useless. We complained to them (5phone calls and 3 emails) with no response. Finally went to ombudsman. In the end got an upgrade to the Iridium phone for $800 on a lower plan than we had with globalstar with some extra stuff thrown in. found out later they actually do a free upgrade if you argue enough. We were on a time restriction to get replaced so we settle with their offer. Got service 99.9% of the time now. Would not recommend globalstar to anyone. Mainly because of their lack of service more than anything.

Thanks for that Josh, I think that I am just about ready to give them a call, like you our Globalstar has been nothing more than useless in the past couple of years, they have promised that it will get better and we took them at their word only to be disappointed yet again. In the past two trips we've had urgent use for the phone on each trip (which includes the one we just finished), I feel that we have given them a fair run so I'm ready to approach them.

Don't expect to much service from them. We told them in 2 emails and phone calls if they did not respond we would go to the ombudsmen. In the end this was our only option, then we got a response from them because they had to. If you have the time to argue with them it is worth pushing for what ever you think is fair to you. They told me new satellites won't be up until about 2010-2011. Until then coverage would be useless. Good luck, hope you get it sorted as it is vital to be able to use it when you need to.
